My thoughts on The Apprentice Season 3

This reality series is about job applicants vying for the opportunity to work in Donald Trump's company. They prove their worth and capability through various projects and also their PR skills.

It was the episode before the season finale and the battle was between Tana and Kendra. Tana is a street-smart, ie. doesn't have a college degree and Kendra is a book-smart, ie, has one. In real life, Tana's a sales executive and Kendra's in real estate.

They were assigned major projects to undertake, together with the worst members of their former team. Tana was to host a celebration event to the NY bid for the 2012 Olympics while Kendra was to promote a new PlayStation game on boxing.

The viewers who watched it last night should not hesitate to agree with my views, I reckon.

The first mistake Tana made was to ask if she could change team members with Kendra. I think that reflected badly on her because she was already giving up on them even before she tried working with them. She was condemning them really. Kendra, on the other hand, accepted her team without any comments. When Tana brought that up, she said that her team was equally bad. I think it showed maturity on her part, that she was willing to deal with the difficulty that came with the team members, as part of her assignment.

It's strange how Tana, who's a street-smart, didn't show this attitude. I would think she had more exposure to the working world than Kendra. After all, she was already working when Kendra was still schooling.

When they started working, Tana did something worse than Kendra. Though both lamented on the quality of their team members to the camera, as was part of the show, Tana actually told Carolyn, Mr Trump's adviser, the same thing too. That was really questioning the ability of Mr Trump's delegation of members.

She may have felt comfortable with Carolyn or felt it was a tit-a-tete session between them but she should have known that would contribute to her appraisal. Carolyn was there as a super- visor and not as a friend. She didn't notice the shock on Carolyn's face upon hearing that. It seems that her EQ's not very good. Again, it's strange that her street-smart quality doesn't teach her all these.

In the process of getting the event ready, she also committed many mistakes. She delegated tasks to her members with complete trust but she did not give a once-through after their completion. As a result, resources were wasted when they had to retract the programme booklets due to derogatory inside information made on the sports personalities. Though the idea was to create a more personal knowledge of them, that backfired. This was the fault of Kristen who printed out the booklets but Tana was still to be blamed because she was the project manager.

She also undermined Chris when a logistics personnel consulted her on a matter. Upon hearing Chris's order which had been given to him, she told him not to ever listen to Chris.

With reference to the event itself, the sports personalities did not know when they were supposed to demonstrate their individual events, since the booklets had been retracted. They had no place to rest at too and were just sitting around. They were celebrities too.

The NY governor was left waiting at the entrance like everyone else instead of being ushered to a designated area for him alone. When the aide told Tana, she said it was all right for that to happen. What a remark! He was the guest-of-honour. It was NOT all right. If even the aide felt unjust at her remark, then she, as the organiser, should too!

The governor wanted to hold the American flag like the rest of the flag-bearers who were holding those of other countries but there was none. As the host country, that was unbecoming. The only one they had was hanging at the top as part of the decorations. She basically shrugged off this lack just as she did when the governor was kept waiting earlier. When Mr Trump arrived and found out about it, he was unhappy. She blamed the person in charge of the flags for not having an American flag too. She was the organiser and the one to be blamed was her, not those under her!

As a governor, I think he would have felt appalled at the way she responded to these two issues concerning him, if he had known it.

Throughout the event, there were expressions of shock on Carolyn's face. I don't blame her judging from the mistakes Tana made. Tana was apparently very satisfied with the whole event but really, these major hiccups were already glaringly etched in minds!

Kendra, on the contrary, did an exceptionally marvellous job. She was more sensitive to the feelings of her members and tried to settle a dispute between them. She had authority but not of the undermining nature like Tana's. She did not speak ill of her members. Of course, she was not perfect either. She spruced up the venue only when the sponsors came and voiced out their unhappiness to her. However it was an awesome revamp! They started off with cleaning the place throughout the night and set up playing booths as well as promotion banners and signs. When Amy went down again, she was pleasantly surprised to find the change.

There were no major hiccups at all throughout the event. Mr Trump and Carolyn went down to supervise her and there were no shocked or unhappy expressions on their faces. The sponsors even wanted to hire her for her campaign efforts! That was a way too obvious sign that she had done it over Tana.

At the boardroom meeting, Tana was berated for speaking ill of her members and for the lack of an American flag at her event while Kendra was too, for making Amy initially unhappy with the venue but praised later on for her successful promotion and claiming a job offer from the sponsors. Kendra said her priority was the sponsors. It's so strange how a sales executive can't see that. The customers are the kings and queens to those in the sales industry after all.

Kendra was also asked as to her reason for crying with her team after the event. She said she was grateful and moved over their desire to help her so unconditionally. This was in contrast to Tana who just thanked hers for their help and left after them, citing the reason as a way of showing she was the boss. Huh??

Kendra was asked if her degree put her at an advantage over Tana. At this point, she got a little arrogant and jeered implicitly at Tana for not completing hers. However Tana said her husband had to move to another place for work. Mr Trump said that was a valid reason and so this put Kendra in a bad light.

As they went out of the room, both seemed unhappy with each other, perhaps due to the academic issue earlier on. They didn't face each other while at the reception area. At this point, the show ended.
